THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND
Namibia was under German rule since 1884 and after that under South African rule since 1915. In 1990, Namibia became independent from South Africa and all children born that year are called “born free generation”. It is a generation that has never been subjected to apartheid’s oppression. In addition to being a privilege, it also means a big responsibility and great things are expected of the children born in Namibia in 1990.
We have visited Namibia many times and it is a country that never ceases to amaze us. We have seen black mambas in the north and seen the sun rise over the red sand dunes in the west. We have run from rhinos in the bush and seen the many shipwrecks along the coast. We’ve danced with the locals, drunk local drinks and tried to learn the click language.
During one of our trips we had the pleasure of meeting a woman. She stood in the middle of the desert in the burning sun and sold gemstones, dressed only in rags which barely covered her most private body parts. She had a slight defect above her upper lip and the house with stamped ground floor on the hill behind her was what she called home. There she stood, day in and day out, and tried to lure the few tourists that passed by to stop and buy her gemstones. Gemstones broken from the land by her father and brother. The woman is named Nomie, she was born in 1990 and that makes her a part of the first children belonging to the “born free generation”.
Even though we didn’t spend much time with Nomie, she inspired us with her luminous eyes and simple way of viewing life. She has grown up in that small house and does not have a clue about the climate discussions that are being conducted on the other side of the desert. Still, it is important for her to keep nature free from plastic, eat what is close and to treat her fellow human beings with respect. Kind of similar to the values of Nordic Beverage Company. It is Nomie who has inspired us to release our first products, with a brand that carries her name.

Gin & Tonic w. orange/ginger
4 cl Nomie orange/ginger gin
Tonic water
Pour the gin into a glass and fill it up with tonic water. Garnish with orange zest.
Tom Collins w. a twist of Nomie

Sparkling water
Simple syrup
Fresh lemon juice
Pour the gin, simple syrup and fresh lemon juice into a shaking tin. Add the gin, shake and strain into a martini glass. Top with sparkling water and garnish with ginger and orange zest.
